ACTIVITIES AND EVENT

Nottingham Filipino Community has taken pride in its many and varied activities since its

inception in 2006.These activities are non profitable, very family-oriented inspired

by a strong community determined to enjoy and share special occasions with family and friends.

We specially like to promote our youth, encourage their participation, explore and enhance

their talents and abilities. We hold our own shows and performances, sports fests, take

part in Philippine and multicultural festivals and in dance and music competitions locally and

around the country.

Our activities, through the years, include the following:

   A.   Yearly Christmas event – This is the highlight of our party celebrations. Filipinos are staunchly religious  as well as    fun-loving who like to sing, dance and feast on our many varied and unique dishes and delicacies.  This year, we hope to have a “Filipiniana” (Philippine attire) inspired Christmas party.

    B.   Participation in “Barrio” Fiestas and Festivals - In the Philippines, every year, every small “barrio” (village) holds a big public celebration in honour of its patron saint. This celebration is somewhat replicated in open ground in this country in the summer months. Philippine organisations in Nottingham have participated in these barrios fiestas,  to name a few:

*1994-2004 - Nottingham Club Filipino participated in the Hounslow, Birmingham, and Morden Barrio Fiestas by way of dance and music and in 2004 was runner-up in the Best Floral Arch Presentation

*July 2012 - Nottingham Filipino Community attends these festivals annually; recently, it participated in a big way in the Hounslow Barrio Fiesta parade in full Philippine regalia and won the Best Costume Category.

   C.  SHOWS/PERFORMANCES (Youth Group) – Our organisation has held many dance, singing and music performances over the years, participating in numerous shows for several years now. In 2011, we formed the Nottingham Philippine Youth Association; its aim is to provide the youth the expertise to learn and the opportunity to utilise and showcase the talents and abilities in our young people. NFC has its own active youth band. Our youth performances include:

One-Piece Band, Winner, “Bands in the Sands” in 2009, sponsored by the Nottingham City Council and Capital FM, original compositions by an all-Filipino youth band.

Xaxa Libantino aged 10 won in the semi-finals singing competition; qualified for the UK Open Mic Competition Finals, London O2 Arena.

*Philippine Dancing, NHS 60th Anniversary, Market Square, Nottingham, 2010

*Philippine Dancing, Nottingham Playhouse, 2010

*Philippine Dancing, Philippine Embassy, London 2011

*Philippine Dance and Fashion Show, Southeast Asian Show, Pakistan Centre, Nottingham

   D.   SPORTSFESTS – Since 2006, our organisation has been holding sports competitions (basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis etc.) among Philippine sports groups in Nottingham. Trophies and medals are given out.

    E.   CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES - Our organisation donates to the ABS-CBN, a Philippine TV Company which takes care of remitting funds to the Philippines in times of natural calamities such as typhoons, torrential rains and flooding which occur periodically, sometimes unexpectedly. We hope to further help the Padua Charitable Fund, a UK-registered charity whose mission is to help alleviate poverty in the Philippines by eradicating the slums in Paranaque, Metro Manila, and providing these rehabilitated housing sites with some of their educational and medical needs.

*In July 2011, our Youth group held a very successful fundraising event for the Padua Charitable Fund.
